How are payday loans regulated in Nova Scotia?
Nova Scotia licenses payday lenders and sets their maximum charges by regulation. Since January 2025 the cost of borrowing is capped at $14 per $100, matching the federal limit that applies in provinces with payday loan laws.
What will it cost me?
Borrowing $400 until your next payday costs up to $56. Repaying late adds a capped default charge and interest on the overdue amount, and your bank may add its own NSF fee on top. Ask both the lender and your bank what those would be before you sign.
What should Nova Scotians try first?
- A small loan or overdraft from a credit union or bank.
- A payment arrangement with Nova Scotia Power or your landlord.
- Free help from a non-profit credit counselling agency, which can negotiate with creditors on your behalf.
