Who oversees payday loans in New Brunswick?
The Financial and Consumer Services Commission, usually called FCNB, licenses payday lenders and publishes information for borrowers. Its consumer staff can tell you whether a lender is licensed and what to do if something has gone wrong.
What does a payday loan cost in New Brunswick?
The maximum is $14 for every $100 borrowed, including all fees. On $600 that’s $84, which works out to an annual rate of about 365% over two weeks. If you can wait a few days, a credit union small loan or a payment arrangement with whoever you owe will almost always cost less.
What should I look for in the contract?
- The amount you’ll receive, the total you’ll repay and the due date, all in dollars.
- The annual percentage rate.
- What happens, and what it costs, if a payment is returned by your bank.
- How to cancel. New Brunswick gives borrowers a short cancellation window; the FCNB page linked below sets out the details.
