Why can’t I get a payday loan in Quebec?
Quebec never created a payday loan licence. Without one, lenders there have to stay under an annual rate of 35%, the same ceiling the federal Criminal Code now sets nationally for most loans. A $14 fee on $100 for two weeks works out to roughly 365% a year, so the standard payday loan simply isn’t legal for Quebec residents.
What are Quebecers’ options for short-term cash?
- Desjardins and other credit unions: small personal loans and lines of credit.
- Personal loans: instalment loans of a few hundred dollars and up, capped at 35% APR.
- Payment arrangements: Hydro-Québec and most telecoms will spread an overdue bill.
- ACEF (associations coopératives d’économie familiale): free budget and debt advice across the province.
Be wary of any website offering a “payday loan” to a Quebec address. It is either not a payday loan or not a legal one.
