Do payday lenders check credit?
It varies. Some run no credit check at all, some do a soft check that doesn’t affect your score, and a few do a full credit check, sometimes only on your first loan. Each lender profile on Koke shows the credit-check wording that lender uses. What all of them look at is whether you have steady income and an active bank account, because that’s how they get repaid.
Can I get a payday loan with bad credit?
Often, yes, if your income and banking meet the lender’s rules. But a payday loan is the most expensive way to borrow, and people with poor credit are often the ones least able to absorb a $70 fee on $500. If you have bad credit and need money, look at a credit union small loan, a secured credit card or a free credit counsellor first.
Does a payday loan affect my credit score?
Usually only negatively. Most payday lenders don’t report on-time payments to Equifax or TransUnion, so repaying a payday loan doesn’t build your credit. If you default and the debt is sent to a collection agency, that collection can appear on your credit report for years.
What builds credit instead?
- A secured credit card: you put down a deposit, use the card for small purchases and pay it off monthly.
- A credit-builder loan: offered by some credit unions and fintech lenders; your payments are reported to the credit bureaus.
- Paying every existing bill on time: payment history is the biggest single factor in your score.
What about lenders that say they don’t check credit?
A lender skipping a credit check is not the same as a lender promising to approve you. Be wary of any company that promises approval before seeing your details, and check its provincial licence. Lenders that don’t check credit still verify income, still charge up to $14 per $100 and still pursue missed payments.
